A New Era of Innovation: Blue Action Lab Partners with Deep Science Ventures

We’re excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership between Blue Action Lab (BAL) and Deep Science Ventures (DSV), a London-based venture creator led by Bahamian Dr. Thane Campbell. This collaboration marks a significant milestone with the establishment of DSV’s first-ever physical campus at BAL’s Conservation Cove.

DSV is renowned for its global efforts in advancing Energy, Food Security, and Climate Resilience through innovation. Last year, the organization launched the Venture Science Doctorate (VSD), a trailblazing program aimed at achieving global sustainability goals. Since its inception, DSV has collaborated with over 30 universities, including prestigious institutions like King’s College London, The Helmholtz Association in Germany, and Cornell University in the United States.

Empowering Bahamian Innovation

Rupert Hayward, Co-Founder of Blue Action Lab, highlights the significance of this partnership: “Blue Action Lab is a launchpad for Bahamians to develop solutions that bolster the green economy and enhance climate resilience. To achieve scale, these solutions must be commercially viable and applicable both in The Bahamas and beyond. There is an urgent need for bright minds to drive technological and scientific breakthroughs that can safeguard small island nations and other communities vulnerable to climate impacts. We believe that many of those future leaders can be found right here in The Bahamas.”

Dr. Thane Campbell, Dean of DSV, echoes this sentiment, pointing to the achievements of Bahamians like Selima Hauber, Lincoln Deal, and Rick Fox, who are already using cutting-edge technologies to address critical challenges locally and globally. With this new partnership, more Bahamians will have the opportunity to be trained in enhancing local food production and developing carbon-negative cities. Dr. Campbell expresses excitement about the bold innovators gathering at Blue Action Lab and the visionary plan to create the world’s next great city on Grand Bahama.

Prime Minister Philip Davis underscores the transformative potential of this initiative, declaring, “Grand Bahama has immense unrealized potential that must be harnessed to fulfill its promise for Bahamians. Many educated Bahamians currently contributing their talents abroad would gladly return to live and work here if they believed in our opportunities. With Deep Science Ventures bringing CGIAR—the world’s largest agricultural innovation network—to The Bahamas, I am declaring Freeport a city of infinite innovation, where we will train ten thousand innovators for Caribbean Sustainability.”

This partnership provides participants with unparalleled opportunities to develop their own research topics and become global experts in their chosen fields. Unlike traditional programs, candidates will connect with multiple labs around the world, build technology prototypes as visiting researchers, and receive support to recruit co-founders, secure investment, and launch their science companies.

A Hub for Inclusive and Diverse Innovation

As universities and investors prioritize diversity in global science and technology, this partnership ensures that more innovators from Caribbean countries can access the opportunities they need to learn, invent, and lead. With 16 global research campuses and hundreds of thousands of researchers worldwide, CGIAR’s collaboration with Deep Science Ventures will unlock the full potential of agriculture for food, fuel, and coastal resilience.

In support of the DSV College’s first campus, Prime Minister Philip Davis affirmed, “Agriculture, Clean Energy, and Climate Resilience cost our country billions of dollars annually. We will free up these resources for our schools and hospitals and build a world-class economy. Our transition will be expedited by world-class developers constructing next-generation innovation hubs. This is the future The Bahamas needs.”

With this partnership, Grand Bahama is set to become a global hub for innovation, driving the next generation of breakthroughs in sustainability and resilience.
